Chris and Matt led a fantastic AIARE Rec 1 course in January. Both instructors are passionate, enthusiastic, and true professionals. They were inclusive of everyone’s skillsets and backgrounds, and are wonderful educators, they conveyed information clearly and provided numerous learning opportunities while staying on track with the course objectives and meeting students individual goals and needs. I felt like I walked away with exactly what I wanted to get out of the course, and it seemed like everyone else did, too. Of all the different courses I’ve taken over the years this was one of the best, and Chris and Matt are certainly the reason. Thanks!

Their Avy 1 course was so much more than I even expected!! I can’t recommend this course enough. I learned so much: how to plan a trip, how to identify avalanche terrain (in the actual terrain), how to make decisions in a group, and even ski and gear use tips! I had heard that Avy 1 courses were mostly digging pits and learning snow science (which is cool!) but this was so much more. The third day, our class of 6 people planned and led the tour and were able to get feedback and discuss our decisions with the instructors as we went. The instructors (Bruce, Jordan & Liz) were AWESOME. They had a ton of experience, patience, and wisdom to share. Plus, we did a ski tour all three days and were able to enjoy really fun powder and tree runs as we learned along the way! Worth every penny!!!!!

I took the AIARE I with SJE. Chris and Matt were the instructors. The course was well organized and the curriculum was comprehensive.
Matt and Chris both did an excellent job encouraging engagement from the students, forcing us to critically think, and giving us the space to problem solve. They were inclusive, patient and personable.
Having previously took an avalanche course over 10 years ago, I came away from this course much more confident in my ability to plan and recreate safely in avalanche terrain.

I joined San Juan Expeditions for the AIARE 1 training course. Our instructor and guide, Chris, was dialed. While following the AIARE framework, Chris took a very practical, hands on approach to teaching the curriculum. I now feel much more confident planning routes and traveling through avalanche terrain. I'm so happy I took the time to take this course, and couldn't imagine a better venue than Silverton and the San Juan Mountains.

Chris was a great guide for the AIARE avy1 course. It was very hands on learning in the field and in the class room. Awesome to get to explore the San Juan’s and learn about the area while in the backcountry. I feel much safer now knowing how to prepare for a backcountry trip and how to use my avalanche gear. Silverton is an awesome town and the whole experience was so much fun! Highly recommend taking your avalanche course through San Juan expeditions!

Our instructors / guides for the AIARE Avy 1 class were amazing (Bruce & Jordan). In-classroom / on-snow ratio was great and really gave me the basics I needed to get out into the BC safely. Would highly recommend SJE !

The family did a half day rock climbing trip near the X rock. Kam was an excellent guide! It was the first time climbing outside of a gym for all of us, and Kam did a great job teaching us and picking routes appropriate for our skills. Would definitely do again!

Bruce, Kam, and Jake did an awesome job with our AIARE level 1 course. We had a great group of boarders and skiers that made our lessons a good time as well. Invaluable information, in-field training, and dropping the 'parlance' we needed. Thanks Crew!
