I attended PTA in March of 2025. The program was reasonably priced and a quick path to becoming a nationally certified CPT1.
Time and Money - 10 day course, $2500 plus exam fees. Class is 4 hours per day split between lecture & Lab. You start drawing blood on day 2. There are no fake arms. You practice on each other! I know that sounds a bit scary. I promise that you are well supervised & Lori is a fantastic teacher and excels at setting each student up for success. My hands were shaking terribly my first time but she was right there with a calm steady hand on mine (literally!!) and talked me through my first successful blood draw.
Written Curriculum is where in my opinion the program fell short. The "book" is a cut and paste collection of the basic info but it is not properly edited & has many typo's & strange sentence structures that were distracting & frustrating.
What saved us in my opinion were additional videos, real hospital forms, numerous tubes, lab samples & extra handouts that the instructor brought in to expand on during lectures. If we struggled with a concept Lori would arrive the next day with new info she had searched out to help clarify a concept.
I have mentioned Lori the instructor a lot for good reason. She is EXCELLENT! She works as a Phlebotomist and she loves what she does. She makes lectures interesting and relatable with real life on the job stories and hands on examples. She really loves to teach and makes each students success her responsibility. She always responded with reassurance, support and helpful information
Lab/hands-on practice
You are required to do 10 finger sticks and 30 venipunctures in the 10 day class period. This is doable but not easy. But anything worth doing isn't easy. You are a bit bruised by the end of the 10 days from practicing on each other however the instructor is willing to offer up her arm and you are allowed to bring in volunteers, family or friends in the last 2 days in order to get all of your sticks in. Everyone in our class helped each other out. It really was a beautiful example of camaraderie.
On an additional note I wish that our labs would have included more from a procedural stand point on what you do with a sample after it is drawn. By having you actually practicing labeling your tubes, placing them in the proper place Chemistry, Hematology etc based on test your drawing for and tube color. I feel like it would have made for a more cohesive learning experience especially when transitioning to your externship.
National Exam Prep - I did pass the National exam. I took it 3 or 4 days after the class ended. This again is where I feel the written curriculum could have done a better job. I chose to purchase the sample tests from the NHA website for $50. The school does provides you with 1 mock national exam that was helpful in prepping, however, it was extremely different then the daily tests that you took on the book material throughout the class. I feel like all of the tests should have been written in the same format as the mock exam integrating more medical terminology and scenarios like the ones on the mock exam and ultimately on the National.
Externship- You are require to do a 1 week/40 hour unpaid externship. The school arranges this for you at one of numerous locations in the area. I did mine at the Sonoma Valley Hospital Lab. During your externship you must do a minimum of 50 successful venipunctures. This was a fantastic experience in real life phlebotomy. It is in this externship that I learned that the blood draw is really just a very small part of the phlebotomy job as a whole. My only wish would have been for the externship to be longer.
Unfortunately PTA does not offer job placement. I think the hope is that you might get hired at the place you do your externship. I however live in Mendocino County so Sonoma Valley is too far of a commute.
Overall I gave 4 stars because of the written curriculum. As I said before the instructor was top notch!
