It's sometimes challenging for older adults to make new friends and have a social network after retirement. I've found this to be a welcoming group with a wide range of fun social activities, along with interesting educational programs. Few groups offer after-hours activities but there are weekly dinners and some weekend activities too. And for those in need of additional services like transportation, tech support for computers or printers, light household maintenance (like changing smoke detector batteries) or just a friendly visitor, their volunteer services are exceptional. Membership is required, but the value exceeds the dues amount!

My late wife and I joined North Shore Village Network in 2014 when we returned to Evanston after living away for almost 20 years. The Network allowed us to instantly become part of a community that we loved, by introducing us to people at a similar stage of life, providing activities that interest and entertain us, and giving us a sense of belonging that wouldn’t have occurred if we had been left on our own. Although I am healthy and able to take care of things that I need to do, it is good to know that if there are necessary things I can no longer do, the Network’s volunteers are there to help. In so many ways, the Network helps combat a sense of isolation that many of us feel may be inevitable as we age.
