I've been a volunteer/visitor at this Prairie for nearly 20 years, and it's still my favorite hangout, along with a group of others, some of whom have been coming there for much longer--since before the site was even designated.

Don Kinnally is the bearded dude who is usually at the Caboose from 10AM until 2PM on Saturdays. Don has made the Caboose into a wonderful visitor center. You will be amazed at the resources in this old train unit, and Don will be happy to tell you all about it.

On days other than Saturday (and in general), if the Caboose is open when you visit, the Prairie, then hop aboard and have a chat with Don or whomever is in there at the time, and don't be shy about talking to us "regulars" hanging around the pavilion or the river. We're all friends out here.

Note: This site closes at dusk; you will get chased out, at least. Note the warning sign about this as you enter the site from the bottom of the bridge.

The person was knowledgeable of the plants, wildlife and the reason for the preserve. Birds, turtles, and snakes were seen on a warm, sunny day. And the caretaker has in the caboose, skulls and bones of native animals, and railroad artifacts. Nice discussion with him.
