Laney College is in a terrible location. The campus is surrounded by homelessness, making it feel unsafe and unwelcoming. I’ve seen people camping out, using drugs, and acting aggressively near the school. Walking to class, especially in the evening, can be downright unsettling. The administration doesn’t seem to be doing enough to keep students safe, and security is minimal. It’s a shame because the school itself might be decent, but the environment makes it hard to focus. If safety and peace of mind matter to you, I’d suggest looking elsewhere.

I came to tour Laney College during an enrollment event advertised on television and because they offered free tuition for the fall 2023 semester. After touring the campus, I found the campus fine for being an urban college. It is next to the Lake Merritt BART station, making commuting easier for its students — they even offered a free AC Transit pass of those enrolled half-time. I was amazed they even offered free meals and books to their students for fall.

Laney has some great instructors who make their classes a truly enjoyable experience. The staff and support at this school are great, but it’s very unfortunate that this school is just in a bad part of town. Homeless people frequently use the campus bathrooms and I’ve walked into people sponge bathing in the sink twice in one semester. The school is dirty, unkempt, and there are needles across the grounds. It’s very unfortunate that the school was built in the brutalist architecture style - it looks like an Eastern European prison you would find in a former Soviet republic.

I gave Lane College four stars primarily due to its strong focus on educational advancement and various student services, including financial aid. The college is reputed to be a supportive learning environment where students can thrive. However, on the downside, skateboarding on campus is heavily frowned upon. It feels like skateboarders are unfairly judged, as if they're causing chaos with their boards, even though major skate spots are located around or within the campus. It would be great if security could ease up on this policy.

I have greatly enjoyed my experience in the Baking and Pastry program of Laney College. I have created desserts I have dreamed of making and perfecting. In my International Patisserie course, I got to learn a variety of classical desserts from all over the world. The chefs are amazing and guide you towards greatness. Often times I was presented with many job opportunities to grow in my culinary abilities. If baking is your passion, I urge you to join the baking and pastry program. You will be taught a variety of techniques and will be whipping up creations you never thought were possible.

I only took an English class about 20 years ago, and it was the most unforgetable class with very smart and caring teacher. I went to New York Univerysity, and came back to Tokyo, and I still distinctly remember this extraordinary class I took at Laney College. I will never forget it. Thank you, Ms.

I have greatly enjoyed my time at Laney College especially in the culinary program. I have made many friends here the instructors are great. We get tons of time cooking in kitchen and even get to sell our own creations in the Bistro. The Instructors are old school and care about the students. Next time your around downtown at lunch time check out the Bistro. And if your thinking of going to culinary school come here!!!

It was my first time attending an event at Laney College. I'm glad the event was the Oakland Roots Professional Soccer game. Parking around the college was pretty good. There were vendors and catering food trunks. A great family 👪 event for all ages.
