With summer coming up fast, I thought I'd post a recommendation for our son's fantastic tutor, Janet Stephens.

Our son, now a 9th grader, has been working with Janet since the spring semester of 8th grade (over a year now). Initially, our son wanted some extra help with Pre-Algebra that we were not able to provide. But once the summer came, he continued his weekly sessions with Janet, but with much less of an emphasis on math, and much more on reading comp and writing.

Now that we are 3/4 thru 9th grade, Janet has continued to help him with Algebra, English and Biology. She is so versatile! And along the way, she has helped to coach him to identify study strategies that work best for him as well as guidance on how to be better organized. His grades have improved and best of all, he enjoys working with her. She is incredibly patient and is a very clear communicator.

Finally, we find Janet so easy to work with. She is willing to come to our home for tutoring sessions. And she is as flexible with her hours as she can be, something we greatly appreciate since our son plays sports and there are sometimes conflicts with our weekly evening sessions. And lastly, I really appreciate her weekly reports about the work that she and my son worked on the night before -- they are quite detailed so they allow us to follow up with him on any remaining prep work for upcoming tests, quizzes, or major deadlines.

I can say with absolute confidence that we highly recommend Janet!

Janet was referred to us by a friend when my son was in 7th grade. He was desperately struggling in math and his study skills were in need of a turbo boost. In came Janet to turn the situation around! My son is now a 10th grader and has come so far academically, thanks in no small part to Janet. They’ve been working together for three years and have developed a relationship of trust and respect. Janet started by reinforcing basic organization skills, which provided the foundation for him to tackle each class. While Janet has an English degree, over the years she has helped my son with 7th and 8th grade math, Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, Chemistry, Spanish I, History and of course, English/Writing. I appreciate the fact that she is able to help my son in a variety of subjects. She is a one-stop shop! Janet is the most punctual person I know, arriving on the dot at the appointed time. She communicates effectively regarding my son’s progress, either verbally after their tutoring session or via email. She seems to genuinely care about my son and his progress in school. Our family owes a great debt to her for what she’s accomplished over the past few years. I cannot sing enough praises about Janet. I hope they continue working together through the rest of his high school career.

Janet has been tutoring our now 15-year-old son in writing and reading comprehension skills, as well as executive functioning skills like project planning, for over three years. Trying to show teenagers how they might make improvements to their scholastic skills can be like walking through a minefield if not approached delicately. Janet has exactly the right temperament for the job. Not only does she provide quality, thoughtful, structured support for our son, but she does so in a way that doesn’t make him feel defensive or frustrated. She is also a fantastic partner with parents, providing clear, comprehensive written summaries about each week’s activities, progress, and upcoming plans, and setting up periodic calls to check in as necessary on direction and priorities. She is also very well priced for her level of expertise and effort.

Janet was wonderful with both my 2nd and 5th grader, focusing them on areas of concern. Although Janet was careful to ensure they were on track with district standards, she presented material and worked through problems in refreshing and different ways, making tutoring an interesting engagement, rather than a chore.
