It is not often that I write reviews, but this is needed. My dad was at Chapters in their memory care for 6 months. The staff was friendly enough, but seemed more interested in setting the tables and doing dishes than engaging with the residents. My father's bathroom was sometimes soiled and unhygienic (putting it kindly) , and my mom had to ask for it to be cleaned. She often cleaned it herself. The worst part is the administration. My dad has nursing home insurance, and chapters was required to submit paperwork so my mom could get reimbursed. They took several months to start the paperwork, so the monthly fees just kept coming from her bank account with no reimbursement. The administration is inadequate to take care of the things that need to be done. She ultimately moved my dad to another facility where the paperwork is done promptly without asking and the staff is warm, nurturing and works hard to build relationships with my dad. It has been 5 months since leaving, and Chapters still needs to submit paperwork so my mom can be reimbursed $6000. The transition of ownership/management is definitely rocky, and I cannot recommend this facility. The one bright spot was the head nurse, Veronica, who was amazing in every area, but she has since left Chapters.

We are so happy to have found Chapters for my 96 yr. old mother-in-law. The atmosphere is very homey, and I can't say enough about the awesome staff. Everyone is so caring, so friendly and care so much for and about the residents. There aren't enough accolades for the aides, the nurses, the kitchen and dining staff, the administration...even down to the maintenance. Shout out to Maddie at the front desk and Calli, who is the "woman in charge". They are all awesome, and I highly recommend Chapters if you are looking for a place for yourself or someone in your family. If I were younger, I would want to work here!!

I had the opportunity to work with Calli Cantrell as a new director of nursing. Calli is awesome to work with. Easy to talk to, dependable, fair, and very knowledgeable about resident care. She is a team player and always quick to step in on the floor when needed to assist when short-handed on staff.. Chapters of Barrington are so lucky to have her. I will never forget the experience I had working under her.

When I first moved my father here, the Sunrise facility and staff were wonderful. When Chapters took over, staff fled in fear of losing their nursing licenses. Current admin in charge has, with help of lax oversight of corporate, created an unsafe environment for residents by:
1) Enacting care staff to resident ratios that are inadequate/neglectful for both the residents and staff. 2) Resident exposure to sickness from key care staff - sick themselves but unable to take time off to get well, resulting in spread of illness to residents. For my dad, it resulted in hospitalization, transfer to rehab (Avantara of Lake Zurich) and quick demise & death after over-medication and lack of proper hydration/food and medical attention at Avantara. IDPH complaints were filed by me for both locations - Chapters twice - once for my diabetic, wheelchair-bound dad not having a working call cord for almost 2 months, and then him falling out of bed/going to the ER, and, another after his unexpected death. 3) Not maintaining the property, including LACK OF: supplies for care staff/food service staff, bill payment for trash removal/emergency call cord maintenance, proper outdoor lighting to the building, a working call box/door bell, and more.
4) Having no check in or check out system in place for the safety. Anyone is allowed in the building, by anyone who is able to open the front door, 5) Lack of concern and knowledge of the Chapters of Barrington “CEO” with regard to the memory care patients and staff. The CEO claims to have extensive expertise in dementia care and has a second business on the side. She spends the majority of her time at that job - not looking out for the well-being of the residents/staff in Barrington. She has lost residents since her arrival. A building that can handle 40 people is down to 26 due to families pulling their loved ones, or, in the case of my father, death. She does not know the residents by name or their medical and social-emotional needs. Case in point: She, herself, sent a bill for our father’s room fee after he had died. When we questioned the bill, she said it needed to be looked into first and asked, “Who is your dad?” This, after my multiple pointed interactions with the “CEO” and Chapters corporate. My dad’s death makes it even more imperative for me to advocate him, for the other residents, and for the care staff that are trying their best, but have their hands tied by admin/ corporate dismissiveness, gaslighting, corner-cutting, and excuse-making. I have had direct experience with FIVE assisted living and rehab facilities and it is absolutely APPALLING to see what is happening in many places. Do not let a nice-looking, welcoming entry and the sales pitch fool you. It is the day-to-day care, compassion, and commitment to resident safety and comfort that you must be privy to… and I was… first hand.
When the price tag is $10K/month, I expect the care to fit the bill. This is definitely NOT the case at Chapters of Barrington. Please reconsider before placing your loved one in their care.

I am re-editing my original review to reflect that the current state of affairs at the Barrington location. Sunrise was purchased by Chapters Living. Since this purchase, the level of professionalism, attention to resident care, condition of the facility and amenities, and the dedication to the care staff - who are the core of the company success and critical to resident safety - have all changed dramatically - and not for the better. This is not a reflection of the nursing and care staff in any way. The demise is, I believe, a direct result of ineffective executive management.

I cannot say enough great things about the facility and staff at Sunrise. When my mom started her hospice journey this past spring, I soon realized she would need more care and assistance than I could give her. The staff at Sunrise did not let me down. They are very compassionate and professional and they always made my entire family feel welcome. It was such a blessing and comfort to know my mom received such outstanding care from a staff that went “above and beyond” to make her hospice journey a peaceful one. I’m truly grateful for all their care and support.

Our experience at Sunrise of Barrington was outstanding. The leadership team did such an amazing job with the transition and move to the care facility in February of 2023. The day to day care staff is so compassionate and attentive that it is my pleasure to offer such a positive review.

I chose Sunrise of Barrington for my mom based on the small, intimate community it provided. After moving her in, I realized that it was much more than that. The kind, loving and compassionate staff is what makes Sunrise of Barrington the best senior living community in the area. Would highly recommend.
