Well, I dropped off about $1000 worth of things at this shelter and a very obese, balding, bearded guy was at the front desk. He 'helped' me get the things in, but this guy was extremely rude, patronizing, and condescending, and NOT the kind of guy I would expect to work the front desk of a women's shelter. There's something very wrong with that situation.

I will not be donating here ever again, and I will encourage others not to as well.

I was there for maybe 3 days. Unfortunately because my ex put an order of protection out on me before I could, I was not able to stay. HOWEVER, the staff is so sweet, kind and loving. And the individuals there were equally amazing. I don't know what all they help with but I felt so safe being there. I'm currently still homeless and I'm receiving outreach counseling, I just hope they help with housing as well.

I have a service dog, and the woman who did my intake interview violated ADA laws regarding inquiry about my service animal. By law there are only two questions people are allowed to ask, is this a service dog for a disability and what service do they provide. She asked me all kinds of questions about the nature of my disability, her “certification” as a service dog (that isn’t required according to ADA), how she performs her tasks, who trained her, etc. All of those questions violate my rights as a disabled person with a service dog.

When I suggested she look up ADA laws regarding service animals because she was violating the law, she refused and said “I got it.” But continued to be invasive and disbelieving.

Moreover, as others said, they were heartless about what they do with your belongings once you’re there. You’re only allowed one small garage bag of items (even my service dogs belongings must fit inside it) and anything else gets donated. I came with a suitcase and she said “we don’t allow suitcases.”

They really did everything they could to get rid of me. They did end up purchasing a bus ticket for me to leave the state, but only after she had already said that “they weren’t a right fit for me.” The ticket that was purchased put me on a bus with a service animal for over 2 days with six pages worth of transfers along the way- more than a dozen transfers where I would be responsible for getting my luggage on and off a bus with my service dog. Some of the layovers left me in cold parking lots with no access to water, food, or bathroom for 5-6 hours. It was impossible for me to do that with my disability and I ended up stranded in Ohio and someone had to drive 10 hours to come get me.

They did not offer to help me connect with any shelters where I was going, nor did they offer therapy, food, social services, etc.

While talking to staff before I came in, I was lectured for “shacking up” with someone without being married. I was also asked multiple invasive and unnecessary questions about my religious beliefs, how I celebrate, how I came to have the beliefs I do, why I believe the way I do, etc.

They also seemed not to believe that I have the disability I have, and I was asked by more than one staff member for medical proof of my diagnosis's, more invasive questions about how it affects me etc.

When I was doing the interview with the woman, she had me call the vet regarding my service dog, and then demanded that I give her my phone and wouldn’t allow me to speak for myself on the call. This was extremely dehumanizing and defeating for me - as I have a long history of social advocacy for others, I am a former teacher with a BA, and I am quite capable of speaking for myself.

If you can go somewhere else, even in another state, I would suggest doing that.

The only reason I’m giving two stars instead of one is because there is one staff member there who seem to genuinely care about my well-being and try to help me. They warned me that the service dog would be an issue with the supervisor there, along with other issues I might encounter in dealing with this particular supervisor, and they were absolutely correct. Everything they said would happen, happened. I appreciate this one staff member for the warning and believe they were speaking in my best interest. I don’t want to say their name because I don’t want them to experience any consequences. But even some of the staff there knows that laws are systematically violated, and people are habitually mistreated.

I would not recommend any woman or child to go to this place. It was a place my wife and I were supposed to go to to feel safe from our abuser, but it wasn't our abuser we had to fear inside. The staff and supervisors have no hearts or compassion for the clients and the things they allow to go on are unbelievable. There was a client that that was verbally abusive and even made threats of hurting someone inside and staff only had conversations with her making things far more worse. One lady left with her child because she felt it was unsafe for him. Another client cried on a daily basis. The staff didn't care one bit. I was 34 weeks pregnant and they refused to allow me to bring anything in for my unborn child and were extremely cold hearted and rude about it. I was only allowed a car seat and only if new in the box which I could not afford. The place is a joke. I took photos of what they expected me to put a newborn baby in to bathe- a baby tub full of mold and mildew, all 3 of them. The changing table was beyond disgusting and full of holes. They offer no help at all with anything. I'm now in a place I feel safe and receiving the help I need and allowed to have items and clothes for my unborn baby to prepare for her birth.. Please ladies don't go to this shelter. Its not a safe place and the supervisors are horrible people along with the staff. My wife and I were told in confidentiality and concern that if we kept reporting and complaining what was going on we would have to leave shelter. That's not right . this place should not be open or it should be overtaken by someone else.

I have been looking for a counselor since August of 2017 when I moved here. Between insurance issues and therapists who fail to listen to their clients I’ve had 1 bad experience after another. Finally someone recommended the Center for Prevention if abuse. After only 2 sessions I totally feel like Teresa gets me. She asks questions like do you like homework or what do you feel your biggest issue is? And she really listens to the answers. Can’t recommend more

I called November 6th and spoke to a lady that took my info a week later they left a messege but no name of who called. So I called back several times. They retook my info. It's now November 17th and I haven't heard anything back. They donot care about you. They just want money so they have a job.

This is an awful place to go. It's unsafe and very uncomfortable. They allow clients to make threats and verbally abuse others in the shelter and say they can't do anything about it because it's considered hear say. Staff has no interaction with clients and do not come out of their office and we were told to bring the resident that was making threats in front of the one camera they have and and let her make a threat on camera. Who does that? We also reported a child being abused and they said it was hearsay . According to the ilcadv it is mandatory for any staff to report a child being harmed if it's reported by another resident to staff.. this is a place to lay your head at night for 6 weeks and nothing more. They want you to leave in the same predictament that you arrived in. Lost everything I had in house fire due to abuser burning it down and they would not allow one item to be brought in for an unborn baby due in 4 weeks. It is a set up for failure not success.staff will not work with you they will not sit down with you and help you with calls or anything. They pull random numbers off the internet and say go call these people which when called they say they offer no help. One trusted staff member came to us and advised us that we shouldn't say anything else about what's going on or we would be departed from the shelter.. I am currently now in the process of reporting everything to the right people.
