Reviewing on behalf of my experience and my mother's. I had a somewhat good experience as a minor with youth counseling 2 years ago, and had 3 counselors in the span of 2 1/2 years. The youth counseling is pretty good, and the youth counselors were the most emotionally intelligent, insightful, sweetest counselors I've ever had. HOWEVER, Psychiatrically my experience was AWFUL. I was 16 and suicidal, Dr. Velincia was the psychiatrist I would see there (over a TV screen mind you. My mom would drive me 30 minutes out to sit in front of a TV) She was so out of touch and told me some of the most outrageous things, like to use MY ANTIDEPRESSANTS as a "reward" for getting work done, insinuating I had to earn it. (Rewarding yourself with little things is a great way to cope with being busy, but medication is not an appropriate reward for that.) I once visited and expressed I was passively suicidal, often thinking about self harm but never acting on it. I started crying and opening up about how I had self harm thoughts on the way to the appointment, to which she IMMEDIATELY decided I should be put in a mental hospital! Which, isn't a horrible decision, but it was how she presented it to me. She basically said I HAD to. I was terrified!! They eventually evaluated me and the lady who evaluated me was so nice and calmed me down, not just by concluding that I shouldn't go but by just being great at her job. That psychiatrist was plain awful... Also, their wait lists grow longer and longer as time goes on.

On behalf of my mother, she had two counselors here and they were both really bad at their jobs. They weren't jerks or anything, but they just weren't good at their jobs. My mom asked something along the lines of how can she comfort me while I'm going through a period of intense anxiety while she's also experiencing intense anxiety/stress different from mine. And they straight up said they don't know. I know for a fact if she had any of my counselors, they could have given her a good answer. Her counselors gave her ideas and answers to her questions that were either obviously bad decisions or irrelevant. Basically gave her poor advice.

Also they put my mother on an 18 month waiting list. My mother gave the lady a bunch of information about her struggles (which in my opinion require somewhat urgent care) and then made the decision to put her on the crazy long waiting list. Come on now... 2.5 stars for youth, -1 stars for adult counseling.

I’ve been trying to get counseling since October 2022. I have seen one counselor 4 times since then and that was just to fill the paperwork out. Now they are supposed to assign me another one. I’m not at all happy with them. About time I go elsewhere because they apparently don’t care for their patients. No help at all!!!!
