I love this store and won’t stop shopping here but there needs to be more clarity when it comes to shopping for birds.last month I called asking to buy hens, and they told me they had 3 left that were 14 weeks at $40 per hen. I went in and the man that helped me told me that they separate roosters from hens. So this made me believe that they knew that they were selling me hens. Last week I came to realize that 1 of the “hens” is a rooster and I called but they told me that I couldn’t return the rooster because of their no return policy. According to the lady on the phone who was rude and became very agitated, the store states that there is a 10% chance that the hens might not be hens. They never told me this. I never saw a sign that says this. No one mentioned anything about this. Maybe for the people that buy birds from them often this is not news but for a first time buyer like me which I mentioned to them I was, this caught me off guard. This week however I came to find out that all 3 “hens” I bought from them are in fact roosters. I do want to mention that when I called the first time, the owner (not the rude lady) did offer me to bring back the first bird to examine him and I would get a refund. I appreciated that a lot from the manager. This is not a post to say bad things about the store but rather to bring some awareness about “hen” situation and also the way customer service is handled. We bought our chicks here that are now chickens. They were more than helpful helping us get started with what we needed and they're always kind and friendly service. And when your stuff is heavy they'll load your truck for you.

Always a great experience! Very friendly and helpful. If there's something you want they don't have, they will do what they can to get it. Once a year they do chick day. If you plan on getting chickens, this is the place. They have an amazing variety. Recommend getting there as early as possible, at least a couple of hours. Employees are very knowledgeable so if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. If you need feed or hay they have it. You don't have to carry it either. Just make sure to let them know at the register and they will radio it out to the warehouse and they take it to your vehicle. They have a great section for food preservation, a decent book section for the DIYer, a good selection for bovine and equine care from tack to vaccines, along with administering equipment. If your into bee keeping or starting out with it they have the basics to get you going. Never a bad experience, awesome family business!

I called all over East SD County for a Tribute product and found it at Hawthorn. They had the product at the counter waiting for me when I arrived. No wasted time! Excellent customer service over the phone and in person. Highly recommend!

Our local feed supply store just a few miles away does not carry Aubi Chick hemp shavings. I drive 17 extra miles to Hawthorns just for the hemp shavings for my urban chicken coop and have been doing so for 5 years. If you haven’t tried hemp shavings they are 100% worth the extra price. They cut down on smell drastically if not to zero, low dust and compostable. For my size coop I only do a full shaving change every 2 years and throw them into the garden. I buy over the course of the year about 5 bags. I add DZ earth and vinegar to keep it fresher weekly. Usually after winter rains I add a bag to freshen the coop up because it’s a pretty airy coop. I’m located within a residential neighborhood and also run a small Airbnb and everyone says when standing directly next to the coop “this doesn’t even smell chickens” Hawthorns is the only feed supply store I have ever found to carry them and Im so thankful they keep them stocked!

Excellent selection as compared to many other country stores in my area. The building is much larger inside than it appears when you first pull up.

The staff is very knowledgeable and is always able to answer my questions. Each of the employees specializes in different livestock, rather than having a vague generalized knowledge. This diverse level of expertise allows them to better guide me in the right direction depending on my unique situation.
