My son was in Canyon State for 8 months. Erin Kelsey is an absolute joke and fails to do her job correctly and then creates lies to save her ass. The whole time he was there I was fighting to make sure he got his meds and remained safe in their custody. DO NOT TRUST ANYTHING THEY SAY and make sure you get it all in writing or recorded.

Parents please if you are reading these reviews to see if this is a good place to send your at-risk youth, it is not! I'm begging you not to put your child through some of the experiences that I had to go through. I'm also begging the Department of Child Services to actually look into this place thoroughly. My name is Daniel Baker and I went to Canyon State Academy for 8 months in 2016. The abuse I went through was so bad that I had to risk my physical safety to escape this place twice. (I say risk because if you got caught you were tackled and bent in half to where you were pretty much kissing you nuts. I know this because before i ever escaped the GL at Encanto cottage used me as an "example" to anyone wanting to escape. Before I EVER thought to) Although the Department of Child Safety still put me back for a second time and I had to do the same thing again. It wasn't until then that they finally decided that something wasn't right. I'm not some homeless jobless drug addict that's coming here because I'm upset about the interactions I had with people that were supposed to help better my life. I am 24 now. I function and work and live everyday just like the rest of you. All that I am wanting to do is give all of you my story so that none of you accidentally put your problem children through abuse that WILL be hidden. There is a difference between discipline and beating a 15 year old child like they're a grown man.

Remember I ran away from this place and was brought back... I willingly came back did not put up a fight, not aggressive anything soon as I got back to canyon State I was restrained for at least 3 hours. I was walking normal and randomly the 2 guy staff from the boys side grabbed me they twisted my arms so far back my shoulder blades had bruises these staff are abusive here

the abuse that goes on behind these gates is indescribeable, when i was in i was 15, and was in no way shape or form a threatening person, yet, when i got restrained for "eyeballing a staff member" i was lifted off the ground by the force the staff put onto me during said restraint. i was forced to do bear crawls for 3 hours, the skin on my palms became blistered and peeled off, creating a raw, burning wound. they put on a bandaid and told me to continue or i would be punished further, i was verbally put down daily by the staff over my weight, humiliated in front of others for the sake of "teaching me a lesson". we were forced to do strenous work outs including 3 mile runs in 110 plus degree weather. the worst part of all of this is that you cant say anything, you ae silenced and threatened with punishment for speaking out. the people that manage and work at this place are beyond disgusting human beings, they barely deserve the title of human at all. if you want your kid to have trauma and feel as though they deserve abuse, canyon state is the place youre gonna want to send them. i hope the grown men and women who work here get charged.

This place honestly changed my life. I originally wrote a bad review, I was young and angry but I was actually taught a lot of good things here. Shout out to GL Wilson GL Robertson (the shorter one) Coach Marquez and to the male nurse who used to call me Sir Willingham? sorry can't remember your name it's been a long decade and a half.

My name is Lorenzo and ive been in canyon state academy for 8 months. I have some positive experiences but mostly negative. The staff there abuses the kids. I remember one of them was a GL of A shift of Farmers or Encanto cottage i believe. I did hear that he broke some kid’s arm and he ran away from the repercussions. If you plan on putting your kid there, make sure its a short time like few months. Never more than 4-5 months because of the mental/physical damage that can occur due to bullying by other kids and staff exploiting the power they have to physically hurt the kids.

The director, Brian Heath, and his staff are such an amazing team of people that truly want to see every student succeed in spite of the challenges of being in foster care or coming from unsafe environments. I know the students are often struggling with traumas and aggression because of their circumstances, but I have seen the most difficult lives turn into the most beautiful adults who treat others with honor and respect because of the values instilled in them at CSA.
I am so grateful to God for all that He has done to provide such amazing people to help these youth overcome and lead the path for future generations to know that nothing is impossible with God.
