Excessive pricing and lack of transparency for yellow fever vaccine

My wife recently visited Passport Health for a yellow fever vaccine and was charged over $500 - more than double the typical cost across our state and the nation.

While she didn't inquire about the cost beforehand, the pricing feels excessive and potentially exploitative. The lack of easily accessible pricing information is a significant concern, especially for a travel-related medical service.

It seems that the healthcare industry, including establishments like Passport Health, operates on the assumption that patients won't ask for prices upfront. This practice needs to change. Patients shouldn't have to play detective to avoid unexpectedly high medical bills.

I strongly advise potential customers to insist on a detailed price quote before receiving any services here.

First, this place is hard to find. Second they are scamming people with the cost of this vaccine for 3x of the amount. They don’t tell you how much it costs beforehand and if you cancel/decline then you have to pay a fee. They even charge you a fee if you don’t pick up any prescriptions and have to call it back in. If I wouldn’t have been in a time crunch then I would have definitely booked elsewhere.

The nurse on site was extremely knowledgeable and prepared to discuss a wide range of health issues relative to our destination. She was unbiased in terms of pushing certain vaccines, simply presenting the facts — pros and cons. All vaccines were on hand. I received five injections and was given comprehensive info on side effects, etc. Online scheduling was easy, although the pre-appointment paperwork was exhaustive. It's worth filling out online to get it out of the way. The major downside is the expense. After the fact, I learned that several local pharmacies had the vaccines on hand for a fraction of the price -- some were even covered by insurance and free. So my only side effect was buyer's remorse.
