Pre-K through 6th grade was a fairytale for our daughter in the public school system. Her needs were being met, she was learning, growing, and accomplishing great things that we were told she would never be able to do. Yes, we had our issues that no special need child or parent should have to go through, but those issues were minut compared to what was about to happen. Welcome to 7th grade. With a simple twist of the magic wand, our fairytale was over and our nightmare began. Our daughter had a teacher who didn’t care about her well being or wanting to see her succeed. Our daughter started to regress in all of her skills. The girl (who is semi-verbal, mind you) who once loved school, was begging not to go. Her teacher only saw her for her disability and not for who she truly is. I can go on and on about how horrific it was but know our world, like our daughters, was shattered.
We ended up withdrawing our daughter from the public school she was in and I was absolutely terrified to enroll her into another public school. That’s when I reached out to Sunrise Academy on a whim… not even sure they had a placement for my daughter. After a short conversation, our daughter was to start the next week. From day ONE, our daughter’s demeanor changed. She was happy again! She was begging to go to school again! She was laughing and learning again! My husband and I felt that we were sending our child to a safe place again! The staff at Sunrise Academy see our daughter for who she truly is and they see her potential, not only in academics but in life. They see that she can be successful and are pushing her to unlock her skills. Our fairytale is back. THIS is what school should be about. Learning, exploring, doing hard things, learning life skills, making friends, learning social skills and how to manage emotions. I could go on for days about the wonders of Sunrise Academy. But, if you are a parent of a child with different, special abilities, looking for a school setting where your child will excel, be loved for who they are, and be pushed to unlock their greatest success, look no further then the amazing ladies at Sunrise Academy.
