As a professional in Dentistry I provide patient care for our patients. I have been in this field over fourteen years. I wanted to come on here and show recognition to Jeanna and Key. They are amazing caring and compassionate care givers! It makes my heart warm to be able to see there are still great caring people who take their job with much pride! I went to Opportunity House, Inc. for my sister's annual planning meeting. Opportunity House staff are very well informed about the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities. My sister and I are very pleased with the services she receives. Staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. The entire building is very clean and well-staffed.
After the staffing, my sister showed me around to the new areas of the building-the production areas, the new break room, the new gym, new classrooms, and new offices. My sister is very proud to be able to continue to work part-time, go to her classrooms where she enjoys volunteering and the choices available to her. At her small-group home she enjoys having her own room and having the key to her room.

Opportunity House holds a certificate issued under section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act. This means that they legally pay disabled workers sub-minimum wage in their "sheltered workshop" (aka, sweat shop). Workers are paid based on how much they produce.

I am disabled but my disabilities are invisible or hidden: you do not know I am disabled unless I tell you.

I went on a tour of Opportunity House and the employee told me that one of their workers earned 10 cents per hour.

"I don't know how anyone could work so slow," she said and laughed.

This is the old model for disability and rehabilitation services. Keep the disabled out of sight and out of mind. Very blatantly treat us like lesser human beings.

Times are changing. I am proud to be disabled. I expect equal pay for my labor. I am not happy with breadcrumbs. I demand equality.
