Freeport Martial Arts has a great instructor, John Garvins, who is passionate about teaching all kinds and ages of people. It’s a great place for beginners, even with zero experience. Our entire family enjoys going all week to exercise, burn energy, combat stress, and have a social outlet. The space itself is relaxed, clean, and calm, but it’s also a great group of people who will make you feel comfortable and welcome. Jiu Jitsu has a laundry list of benefits that can be utilized for you or your child’s entire life, as a lifestyle with a built in community. This is a perfect place to start that journey!

Jiu-jitsu is something I never knew I needed. I found this community after a year of turmoil, with lower lows than I ever imagined but with that came the highest highs I’ve ever experienced. Freeport Martial Arts gives me the community and confidence to be fully myself. It’s given me an outlet to reduce stress from running a business, a community of relationships that have turned into extraordinary friendships, and way to move my body and mind keeping me both mentally and physically strong. Being relatively new to Freeport, I am eternally grateful for this experience. On days I don’t feel like training, I end up laughing and walking out of there with my mood lifted and excited for the next training session. I urge everyone to try it, try something, somewhere - you never know what you could be missing out on. You may walk out of there with a new best friend, a really cool skill or even just a good story. Come join me on my journey and start yours. We can’t wait to meet you.

High quality instruction gi and nogi. Excellent gym culture. A good mix of people- all body types, skill levels, walks of life. Everything you could want in a good jiu jitsu gym.
Unique location in the historic Raleigh building. Clean mats. Affordable especially if you do monthly membership. Free trial weeks, so no reason not to give it a shot.

I am a complete beginner when it comes to martial arts and jui jitsu is a great place to start. Jui-jitsu requiring lots of patience to master the techniques so dont quiet right away or get down on yourself if you dont catch on right away. Everyone has been super friendly and helpful.

Stopped in tonight for an open mat came down from Detroit. John was super welcoming and knowledgeable. The room is quite large which allows you to work freely during rolling and practicing different techniques. This is a great growing gym for the city of Freeport.

I’m a 41 year old woman. I reached out to Freeport Martial Arts for individual lessons. I let John know that parts of this training would be emotionally triggering as a DV/SA survivor. He assured me things could move at my pace and comfort levels. He has been very kind, understanding and patient.

It’s a very laid back, but still very respectful setting. I started my first lesson full of anxiety and fear and by my third I decided on the goal of becoming an instructor for a women’s only self-defense course. I know with John’s support and knowledge, along with my own determination, it’s an achievable goal.

Fantastic gym, full of great people. I showed up one night randomly from out of state. They were happy to welcome me in. The class ran by John was exceptional. A very high level understanding of jiujitsu. I would highly recommend this gym to anyone and everyone! Whether it’s your first day, or you’ve been training for year - this is the gym to be at.
