Had a great time for a Halloween celebration. We had snacks and punch, learned about nocturnal wildlife in the area, decorated a bat box that will serve as a shelter for the animals, and went on a fun night hike looking for Bigfoot. There was also a nice outdoor fire. I can't wait to go back and see some of the trails during the day!

Interesting gem just yards from the Wisconsin border. A little bit history and a lot of beautiful nature. Fascinating effort to recapture a space for prairie from the foundry by products and garbage that apparently used to overrun the area. You would never know it now. Great for a walk, learn about area history, or enjoy some hands on play for kids.

This is an environmental gem in South Beloit, Illinois that has been open just since 2017. It is a five acre prairie restoration area with a learning center and learning programs during season. If you’re reading this in September 2019, check out the pics for programs coming up. A bonus is a new Rock River Trail center. The Trail is 320 miles running along the Rock River in a Wisconsin and Illinois. Check both the Trail and the Confluence for critical learning opportunities - especially the importance of our watersheds.
NOTE: When you first visit, the entrance is a bit tricky. The address is 306 Dickop street, but it looks like a little alley. See the pic, Dickop St is that little street right between Papa John’s Pizza and Dallman’s Muffler Shop and Blackhawk Auto Sales.

NATC is a wonderful place to learn about nature or simply go for a peaceful hike. The preserve is a beautiful contrast to the urban area that surrounds it and honors the rich history of the land it sits on. Add lots of activities and an informative staff - this place an all-around gem.

This is a beautiful, peaceful, educational nature center, located at the confluence of the Rock River and Turtle Creek on the Illinois / Wisconsin border. They have a 5-acre prairie restoration, learning gardens, pollinator gardens, and nature education classes and hands-on programs year round. Very unique, connecting people with nature in an outdoor learning environment! Beautiful, scenic, fun and always a learning experience!

Nice, quiet place to enjoy nature and explore an historic part of the area. Peaceful confluence where Turtle Creek joins with the Rock River. An early settlement site of Native American tribes. It was a pretty cool day in mid-December when I visited and the learning center was closed. Far enough from busy Blackhawk Blvd for the traffic noise to be too distracting from the little nature hike. I definitely will come back on a nice Spring or Summer day.
