We had an outstanding experience with Competitive Edge Tutoring working with our daughter for her college standardized tests. A friend recommended CET to us and to be honest we weren’t sure what to expect, as finding a good tutoring service can be hit and miss and in the past we had used other tutoring companies without much improvement. But in an initial phone call with owner Alex, he showed an intricate knowledge of the SAT and ACT and the way they are scored, and laid out a course of action for the next few months. We talked about my daughter’s goals and personality so he could match her up with the most suitable tutor, which no other service had done. After mock tests, he recommended that she focus on the ACT as opposed to the SAT, which turned out to be the right call.

My daughter’s tutor Torrin Hallett was fantastic. Their Zoom sessions were a mix of filling in gaps in subject knowledge and making sure she understood test-taking strategy. After working with Torrin for several weeks, she ended up with scores in the 99th percentile for both the SAT and ACT. She did particularly well in the ACT, which went up significantly.

In the end, it comes down to how hard the student is willing to work, the knowledge of the tutor and the chemistry between them, but I can say that Torrin brought out the best in our daughter. Although a good test score alone won’t get anyone into college, now we know that her score won’t keep her out. We are now working with another tutor at CET on application essays. I can highly recommend CET and its tutors.

Ben is an outstanding tutor. He is super intelligent and has a firm grasp of a broad range of subjects. More importantly, he knows how to get our son engaged and excited about each subject. As a tutor, mastering the subject you are tutoring is very important, but knowing how to get your student to truly comprehend what you are teaching is a rare and distinct skill (which Ben possesses). Ben has tremendous academic skills and amazing interpersonal skills that allows him to figure out how best to engage our son to get maximum results. Ben helps reinforce what our son learns in school. We have used him for many years, from middle school to high school. Ben has instilled confidence in our son, taught him important skills on how to think, breakdown, structure, comprehend and tackle each subject/problem. As a result of recent changes to the public highschool admissions process, our rising 9th grader had to shift gears very quickly from his list of 12 public high school options to considering private schools for September 2022. I am writing this at the end of June! Time was of the essence since he needed sit for the ISEE entrance exam for private schools with which he had zero experience. He worked with Master Tutor Alice Rothman-Hicks. They were able to schedule five sessions over the course of one week. His numbers were vastly improved in that timeframe going from the mid-range staines (4 thru 6) to the upper range stanines - scoring 7 7 8 6 on the test. Alice was very supportive, sought to understand where he struggled and delivered strategies he could employ quickly. She expertly identified the difference between him not knowing something vs. being confused about what was being asked or simply not reading the question thoroughly.
