We built a custom home with Gowler Homes in 2022 and moved in during early 2023. Overall, we had a terrific experience and gained a beautiful home.

Prior to hiring a builder, we purchased our lot and so our experiences with Gowler Homes are limited to the home building process itself.

Initial consultation: We interviewed about half a dozen local builders as we tried to match our goals, budget, timeline, and aesthetic with a trustworthy builder. This included a lot of touring and interviewing Parade of Homes builders. Although not a Parade builder, most of the ideas we picked up at the Parade made their way into our home design. We paid a deposit of about $30K which funded the design.

Design: Although Gowler Homes has terrific designers, a lot of this was us as a couple taking hundreds of Parade photos and scrolling through Houzz and creating an idea book. That allowed us to give them an inspo book organized by room. We did this not so much to tell them what to build, but to show them what we wanted. Special shout-out to Matt's architect. In one 2-hour session we went from a few inspo photos to a layout. I tell friends we showed him a picture, and after 2 hours what we got was nothing like the picture and 100% exactly what we wanted. I can't explain that, but it was a cool experience.

Construction: We got a quality house. It is the envy of the neighborhood, and we get a lot of passers-by who will slow down just to look at our house as they drive through the neighborhood.
We've noticed newer homes in the area adopting some of our design choices (imitation is the sincerest form of flattery).

We've been in the house 2 years, and no significant warranty items or issues. During our walk-through last year even the project manager was surprised that we had just two nail pops in the whole house, no settling cracks, no faulty wiring or appliances, and just minor fixes like a pocket door repair, a mis-connected whole-house humidifier, and some touch-up paint outside. Pictures were uploaded DAILY to Buildertrend.com (and I can still access and download everything) with progress updates. We lived nearby and the daily photos meant we were not constantly on the job site. Communication was terrific from the project manager and on-site manager. Questions were answered quickly and changes, while few, were effortless. We learned to "trust the trades" during the process. Instead of telling them what to do, we told them what we were trying to accomplish, asked for their ideas, and tweaked the final design. What might start out as a crude sketch would turn into a gorgeous feature wall or other design element. Their trades were amazing overall. The project manager and on-site manager would point out things to us that THEY were unhappy with...stuff we would not have noticed...and their plan to get it right. A lot of builders would cover up mistakes hoping the buyer wouldn't notice.

Budget and Schedule: Other than the supply chain delays in 2023 (everyone experienced this) which affected our cabinetry, everything else was on time and on budget. Our one and only budget dispute was quickly resolved after Gowler Homes agreed to a line-by-line reconciliation of some budget items that did not make sense to us. It's a complex project and if that's my only "complaint" and the end result was we were on budget then it's a small thing. I know people who part ways with their builders over monetary disputes. We had full transparency throughout.

Post-build: Follow up on punch list items after our move-in date was prompt and the trades were johnny on the spot getting even small things fixed to our 100% satisfaction. After we wrapped, we asked for a complete list of the trades who worked on our home, and we still use ALL of them to this day for new projects around the house or to answer questions we have.

We got our dream home, and the process was overall smooth with few bumps. We do not have the largest or flashiest home in the community. But we have a show-stopper, jaw-dropper, that brings us joy.

We interviewed several custom home builders before we contracted with Gowler Homes. From the moment we contacted Matt Gowler it was a pleasantly different experience to what we had been having with other builders. His communication was excellent – emailed/called us back promptly and was patient and considerate of our endless first-time home builder questions and concerns. We could tell he really loved his work and wanted to make our home-building experience a great one from start to finish. Matt also has an amazing team which were just as professional and considerate of our wants and desires for our “forever home”. And this was all before we signed on the dotted line!

On a more practical note, we contacted Gowler Homes in the first place because we wanted a Design and Build firm - it just seemed to make more sense - better and more efficient communication = less headaches, less mistakes, cost savings. They have also worked with a lot of out-of-state clients, and this was important to us as we couldn’t be there all the time for the building process.

We built a custom home with Matt and his team two years ago and we have not stopped recommending them as home builders since then. You could not find a more honest and hard working team. All of the contractors Matt uses take extreme pride in their work and craftsmanship.

After two years of living in our home we could not be more happy. There have been a few very minor issues, all of them out of Matt’s control. Despite that, he personally reached out to the suppliers and technicians and had them to our home as quickly as possible.
