Characteristics and Features

Rock Creek Open Space is primarily a park that boasts 6 reviews on Google My Business, reflecting its popularity and quality among visitors. The park is particularly noted for its double wide trails, which are perfect for families and hikers of all skill levels. These trails are made of crushed and pulverized gravel, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable walk or bike ride. Spanning an impressive 4 miles, the trail offers a serene escape into the high plains desert, albeit with the typical lack of shade along its entire length due to its location adjacent to new developments and a large medical complex. Despite the absence of water along the creek, the area remains attractive for its natural beauty and the variety of wildlife that one might encounter.

For those who love the outdoors, Rock Creek Open Space is especially good for kids and dog owners, as dogs are allowed on the trails, fostering a community-oriented atmosphere. However, visitors should be prepared for the desert climate, with the trail offering little to no shade, and the lack of mileage markers making navigation straightforward yet potentially challenging for those unfamiliar with the area.

Additional Points of Interest

One of the standout features of Rock Creek Open Space is its proximity to modern amenities and urban development. While this might seem contradictory, the park seamlessly blends natural beauty with the hustle and bustle of nearby suburban growth. The main entry point is conveniently located near medical facilities, making it easy to access and explore the area without hassle.

Recommendations for Visitors

For anyone considering a visit to Rock Creek Open Space, it's advisable to come prepared for a desert hike. Although there are no shaded areas along the trail, the scenery is breathtaking, and the tranquility of the high plains desert is unparalleled. Visitors can enhance their experience by downloading a map from the City of Lafayette's official website, although it's also possible to find them at the trailhead.

The park's average opinion of 4.7 out of 5 speaks volumes about its appeal and the satisfaction it brings to its visitors. Whether you're looking for a peaceful stroll, a family outing, or a place to let your furry friend run free, Rock Creek Open Space delivers a memorable outdoor experience.

This location is a very nice, double wide trail with crushed/pulverised gravel that traverses an area adjacent to new apartments and a large medical complex. Due to the location, there's very little to no shade along the 4 mile stretch of trail (and for the most part, there is no water in the creek!). Maps are located at the main point of entry (across the medical facilities); otherwise, the trail lacks any mileage markers. To be honest, you really can't get lost, as the trail is very visible and truly is a high plains desert.

Great set of trails that lead you from Broomfield to Lafayette to Superior. The city keeps the trails clean and well groomed. There is usually a couple people on these trails either walking, jogging or riding their bikes but the trails are never crowded. I really like the fact that I can get off the pavement with beautiful scenery so close to home.

Part of this "Open Space" may be undergoing changes, at least the view will, specifically the southern part, from the Exempla Cir. entrance (which is a bit hidden at the back of a parking lot), down the Rock Creek Trail to West Dylan Road. (The trail goes underneath NW Parkway). The trail goes behind the Rt 287 Medtronic construction site of "two, five-story buildings containing approximately 400,000 square feet. The second phase...", well you get the idea. I'm not casting aspersions, but foot traffic from curiosity may increase to watch the construction, and that may actually benefit this somewhat neglected public resource. Or they may try to hide all the construction from sight of the path, it's hard to tell in 2021. I'd personally be very happy if Medtronic threw some goodies to those walking the path (such as good, but aesthetically appropriate lighting). We'll see.
