if not for apch and the wonderful mentors I had there, I can't imagine where I'd be now. nearly 30 years gone by and I still think fondly on this place.

it used to be a strange mix of celebrities looking to "do something good" and people who grew up in South Central and wanted to give back to their community. Some of the celebrities who came through or taught there were cool and as a kid it mattered a lot to see that people gave a damn about us. A lot of the time in the 90s, LA didn't feel that way. sometimes we had celebs who clearly were there outta some sort of obligation. usually to a friend or family member volunteering. One group I was in called "gangbusters" mostly functioned as "something to do". Our mentor was dope. she encouraged us, she went to the same elementary school I did and was from the area. she got us on good field trips and always had a new activities (arts &crafts, riddles, puzzles, etc) for us to do. sometimes our group outings were to the founder's (Deborah) house in West LA, which did always feel more like this lady giving a weird flex than actually being about us, but her pool was nice even if she was a little pretentious and showed me favoritism because I spoke "standard" English and rarely used aave, versus some of the other little girls. But we weren't there for her, so it really didn't matter to us.

This place is not for all. They denied to give me a backpack today as they promised one. I took metro to take there as it is miles away from my house. I was on the summer’s heat for 2 and half hours. I couldn’t hold back my tears after they denied me. How poor dad I am as I cannot buy a good bag for my daughter and have to meet such people who humiliate me without any proper reason. They couldn’t prove me I am not one of the members of community. This is a disgrace. I never go back there. If I make enough money in future I promise to give backpack to my community without judging their races and personalities.

Became a member in 2013 at 16 years old and my life was changed forever! Love this place and my family has been very grateful because of the memories and opportunities available to the youth because of the work of apch. I got to travel and got my college paid for because of this place. ?

A Place Called Home is exactly what their name represents. My children have been members since they were old enough to attend. This organization gives so much to the community. They provide great resources for parents and make sure that their members have everything they need emotionally, physically, and also their personal needs. I have never been to an organization like this before, they deserve every sponsorship that they receive. Everything they do is really for the community and the employees are very kind. You can tell that they have love and compassion for their members. It’s a very positive and safe environment for children. They provide a lot of great programs for the children as well as community events so families who are not involved still get to appreciate their services. It’s awesome. One day I hope to be able to give back to them.

It's my second home. The perfect place for kids and teens where they can find many activities, like homework help, music, sports, art, scholarship opportunities, and more. This is an organization nonprofit that it's good to have in our community. It's a pleasure being part of APCH family
