Just finished my first Hot Walking experience with a thorough-bred horse. The facility looks in nice shape (especially since the Lilac wildfire). I am happy to help walk the horses and learn about how the training center is run. Thanks to Victor and Doug for making this happen.

Unfortunately it's closed for a bit due to the fires. But considering they had 500 horses and about 6 minutes from the time they saw the fire coming to evacuate. It's absolutely amazing how they saved 90% of those horses. The dedication and bravery those trainers ,grooms and staff did was unpresidented. Some of them suffered severe injuries trying to rescue horses. If you take anything from this post. Let it be that organizations like PETA should be seen for what they are. They slammed these heroes in an effort to gain support and money for their cause. This was a natural disasters not neglect. And if PETA had issues with the care of horses at San Luis Rey Downs then how come we haven't heard from them about it til the fire. PETA is just trying to grab a spotlight at the expense of a tragedy. You should ashamed PETA.
Hopefully SLRD will be back up and running soon.

I have never been to the training center but it looks lovely. I just want to say how truly sorry I am for the loss of the horses in the fire.
On October 9th, 2017 shortly after midnight, my horse died in the Cascade Fire in Yuba County, CA. I rescued him at the age of 5 when a broken sesamoid bone in his right hind leg needed surgery thus ending his racing career. He was bound for slaughter, this grandson to Alydar. He was my horse for 23 years until the night of the fire. The agony of his death is unbearable.
I am so sorry for all the horses and all the horse owners.
I know first hand how freakishly fast a fire can be with such terribly strong winds. You cannot fight it. It is fast, unpredictable, and scary as hell.
If there is something I can do to help please let me know. I hope to have my pasture fence repaired soon. Maybe I need to rescue another beautiful Thoroughbred Race Horse, or be rescued by him.

How can people not know how to let the horses loose ahead of time verses letting them burn alive in the lilac fire. Disgusting and should be sued! Those animals that perished went through horrific pain!
